Welcome to the Municipality of Tweed!
On June 25, 2018 test results showed that the Tweed Municipal Water Supply had a sodium level of 25.1 milligrams per litre (mg/L) of water. Provincial water regulations require that the sodium concentrations in municipal drinking water be tested every five years. If the concentration exceeds 20 mg/L it is to be reported to the Medical Officer of Health.
The Ontario Drinking Water Standards has established an aesthetic objective of 200 mg/L of sodium in drinking water; a concentration at which it can be detected by a salty taste. Sodium is a naturally occurring compound often found in groundwater. While our bodies need a small amount of sodium to be healthy, excess sodium intake may present a concern for persons on a low sodium diet or for persons suffering with hypertension, renal or heart disease.
Information has been provided by Hastings Prince Edward Public Health about sodium in drinking water and we urge you to read the notice and fact sheet provided. This information has also been provided to our local health care providers.
