Welcome to the Municipality of Tweed!
The flags at the Municipal Office will be flown at half-mast in memory of the 215 children of the Tk'emlúps te SecweÌ“pemc First Nations whose bodies were found at the former Kelowna Residential School, as a reminder of the need for all residents of our Municipality and across Canada to reflect on our past and embrace reconciliation.
“Hastings County values the strong and supportive relations we share with our neighbours in the Mohawks of the Bay of Quinte Territory, our Algonquin communities and indeed all Indigenous peoples. Understanding our past will help us seek a brighter future together.” Rick Phillips, Warden of Hastings County.
“Our flags will be lowered in memory of the thousands of children who were sent to residential schools and many who never returned to their families. The flags will be lowered for 215 hours to honour the 215 children whose bodies were found at a former residential school. Tonight at 6:00 pm, I am asking residents to turn on their porch light and place a stuffed animal on the step to recognize the hardship that these children and many in residential schools experienced.” Jo-Anne Albert, Mayor of the Municipality of Tweed.
