Welcome to the Municipality of Tweed!

Back to News
Grand Re-Opening of Boundary Bridge October 1, 2020

The Boundary Bridge located in the Municipality of Tweed over the Skootamatta River being a
single span, single lane through truss was closed to all traffic on June 15, 2018 due to the
deteriorated condition of the through truss.
The original bridge foundations were replaced in 1985 with new concrete abutments on piled
foundations followed by the reinstallation of the original through truss.
The bridge is of the upmost importance to the municipality as it is the only municipally owned
access to the properties on the west side of the river. Following the closure of the bridge, in order
to maintain access to the local property owners, temporary access via a private road was
arranged by the Municipality.
The Municipality was fortunate to receive funding for the project through the Investing in Canada
Infrastructure Program: Rural & Northern Communities Infrastructure Stream. The $1.77 million
dollar project was made possible by 50% funding by the Government of Canada, 33.33% funding
by the province of Ontario and 16.67% funding by the Municipality of Tweed.
The existing bridge foundations were salvaged and a new single lane pre-engineered steel panel
truss was constructed.
The new structure was opened on Friday, September 11, 2020 with an official ribbon cutting
ceremony on Thursday, October 1st, 2020.

“On behalf of the Council of the Municipality of Tweed I am pleased to see the completion of the
Hawkins Bay Bridge project. Our rural Municipality faces a unique infrastructure challenge, as we
have 52 bridges and culverts to maintain for our residents. Without Federal and Provincial
support, this project would have cost the Municipality of Tweed 1.8 million. We are excited for our
residents to once again have access to their homes over the new Hawkins Bay Bridge.”
Municipality of Tweed Mayor Jo-Anne Albert

“Bridges always make a difference; they link communities, neighbours and lives. Replacing a
bridge ensures communities, neighbours and lives stay connected – and that’s what this new
bridge will do for many decades down the road and over the Skootamatta.”
Daryl Kramp, Member of Provincial Parliament for Hastings—Lennox and Addington

“Investments in rural communities ensures that they have the infrastructure they need to make
them more resilient and competitive, while creating jobs and contributing to Canada’s economic
recovery. The Boundary Bridge replacement will help improve emergency responses in the area
and make the bridge safe for residents to use. These types of projects demonstrate how the
Government of Canada is making strategic investments in public infrastructure to improve the
quality of life for Canadians living in rural communities and enable them to thrive.”
Neil Ellis, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, and Member of
Parliament for Bay of Quinte, on behalf of the Honourable Maryam Monsef, Minister for Women
and Gender Equality and Rural Economic and Rural Development
