Welcome to the Municipality of Tweed!
We are informing residents about the presence of blue-green algae, also known as cyanobacteria, in Stoco Lake. These microscopic organisms can pose serious health risks to both humans and animals.
Recent tests have confirmed the presence of blue-green algae in Stoco Lake. These organisms thrive in warm and sunny conditions and can make the water appear bluish-green, or like green pea soup or turquoise paint. Exposure to high levels of blue-green algae and their toxins can cause severe health issues. Please avoid using, drinking or bathing in any water that have a bluish – green scum on the surface or around the edges. Please restrict pet and livestock access to the water.
Please stay vigilant and safe. If you suspect that you or your pet has been exposed to blue-green algae toxins, seek medical or veterinary help immediately.
We have informed Quinte Conservation Authority and the Ministry of the Environment Conservation and Parks are aware. But we will keep public informed of developments, as we become aware.
