K0K 3J0 Telephone 1-613-478-3989 The Tweed and Area Historical Society, founded in 1988, seeks to preserve and promote the rich heritage of this area (the former Village of Tweed, Hungerford Township, Township of Elzevir & Grimsthorpe and the surrounding region). The volunteers who organized the first Tweed and Area Historical Society in January 1988, immediately presented a Heritage Day on February 20, 1988 in the Tweed Playhouse. The resounding success of this initial event spurred them to proceed with the formation of an Executive of 4 and a Board of 4 Directors on June 16, 1988. Thereafter work began on incorporation culminating in the Tweed and Area Historical Society becoming affiliate # 6236 of the Ontario Historical Society on May 4, 1989 an a Registered Canadian Charity January 1, 1990. The Tweed and Area Historical Society’s mandate is to preserve and promote the rich heritage of Tweed And Area, which it achieves through the work of its Committees: Membership, Events and Fundraising and Grants. These committees are responsible to the Board of Directors composed of 8 members elected by the membership at each Annual General Meeting in January. The 8 Directors then select one of their number to be the President for that year. The remainder of the Executive (Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer) are appointees of the Board to which they are accountable. We have established the remarkable Tweed and Area Heritage Centre, Houston House 1897, highly visible and easily accessible at 40 Victoria St. N. Village of Tweed.
