Tweed Economic Development

Municipal residents have enjoyed a small town, tight knit, rural way of living for generations. However, as society changes and develops we are faced with challenges to keep up and maintain our way of life. Understanding how this community is being affected by broad trends and having a sound appreciation for what makes it unique are fundamental to setting any strategies. Knowing how the Municipality is faring in comparison with other rural townships and big cities will be crucial for determining the scope of our activities.

Economic Development is a process which influences the growth and well-being of a community through such means as job creation, job retention, improved tax base and a reasonable quality of life. (Economic Developers Association of Canada). This department of your Municipal government will work very closely with other agencies, including Hastings County, to represent you and implement strategies and programs designed to have a positive economic impact. We know that community economic development is most likely to succeed when it is planned and purposeful, engages many stakeholders, and complements the overall vision and strategic plan of the community. The Integrated Community Sustainability Plan provides a solid foundation for us to implement the circular flow of planning (shown below) which summarizes our community approach to creating and implementing a strategy.

‘Business as usual' is no longer an acceptable mindset when competing against large chains and an unstable economy. Rural communities need to be pro-active to maintain and increase community wealth. The Municipality of Tweed is developing an Economic Development Strategy that will work in co-operation with higher levels of Government and neighboring Municipalities and towns.
