The Municipality of Tweed would like to welcome the First Annual Isagenix Walk/Run in support of Food for Learning on Saturday, June 16, 2012 at Tweed Memorial Park. Organizers anticipate participation from all over southern Ontario and challenge locals to come out for the day. For those who wish to walk or run, registration begins at 9am, with two route options; a five kilometer route in town or a fourteen kilometer loop around Stoco Lake. Registration is $20.00 a person, children are free, and donations are always welcome.

" We wanted to align ourselves with something in our community that fit with our values, and Food for Learning was a perfect match" said Stacey LeSage from Isagenix Team Freedom, the sponsors of the event. "Food for Learning runs programs in our local schools that promote and provide proper nutrition and healthy eating."

During registration there will be a yoga warm-up, and then the walk or run will begin. When participants return to Tweed Memorial Park there will be a farmers' market to buy local products and a barbecue in support of a local Sears Great Canadian Run team. Food for Learning runs programs in our local schools which promote and provide proper nutrition and healthy eating. This includes breakfast and snack programs, with some schools offering lunch programs as well. This program depends on donations and community support. All the money raised through registration will be going directly to the Food For Learning Programs.

The Municipality of Tweed has prepared a new draft Comprehensive Zoning By-Law under Section 34 of the Planning Act to regulate the use of all lands, buildings and structures within the entire Municipality of Tweed. The Municipality of Tweed would like to welcome home friends and family to the Family Feud Hockey Tournament this upcoming long weekend. The annual tournament is set to take place Friday and Saturday at the Tweed Community Centre (Arena).

The 'Feud' will feature 18 hockey teams playing almost around the clock Friday and Saturday. What began with strict family eligibility and was considered to be very competitive has evolved over the years to accommodate the changing dynamics of the families within the community. While most teams are made up of primarily the extended family, the odd time teams need to pick up a support player to fill a roster. Teams still vie for the very valuable opportunity for bragging rights, but the tournament is primarily for fun, and that is what keeps community members and out-of-town family coming back year after year.

The Municipality of Tweed acknowledges this as an important community event. In many ways it defines the type of small town, tight knit, family orientated community that residents value and which attracts people to come and work, live, and play. Lots of money is spent in town and the tournament always raises funds to help with recreational projects in the community.

For more information on the Feud visit the Tweed Heritage Centre. In 2010 the Tweed Family Feud presented the Heritage Centre with photos throughout the 25 years of operation, along with a $5,000 cheque in support of the Centre.

The Municipality of Tweed declares 'Aloha' as the official salutation for the month of August in support of the Hawaiian theme of the Second Annual Tweed Tribute to Elvis Festival. Reeve Jo-Anne Albert and fellow council members were presented with Hawaiian Leis by hula dancers and visited by the King himself at the council meeting. The Municipality of Tweed is asking the local community and businesses to get involved with the Hawaiian theme this summer in support of the Tweed Tribute to Elvis Festival for all the benefits it brings to the community.

Vice Chair of the Elvis Festival Committee, Bob Taylor stated to council "The Hawaiian theme is to commemorate the 40th Anniversary of Elvis' famous Hawaiian concert. Elvis loved the Hawaiian Islands and filmed three of his movies there, including Blue Hawaii. Hence the 'Aloha' concept was born. By having 'Aloha' proclaimed the official salutation in Tweed it will create unparalleled awareness and hype leading up to the festival by including the entire municipality,"

Trail Recieves $50,000!

"Thanks to your Cheers" the Eastern Ontario Trails Alliance (EOTA), the Municipality of Tweed and the Township of Tyendinaga were successful in their Molson Coors Community Cheer application. The $50,000 grant will go to develop a trail from the Tweed Recreation Centre to the Tyendinaga Recreation Centre!

The grant will go towards a multi-use trail that will act as a direct link between the two communities. A collaborative effort between the EOTA, and the communities of Tweed and Tyendinaga with support from the County and other local organizations. The primary objective of this project is to provide infrastructure for community groups to use, promote and hold events that encourage physical activity, health and wellness. Multi-use trails have been identified for not only the physical, mental, and economic benefits to a community but also as a connecting link to other popular recreational activities. Market research suggests that thousands of people per year will routinely use the trail.

"This new trail development will be a welcome addition to the already existing trail network" said EOTA Acting Chair Linda Bracken.

"We are very pleased that EOTA will be receiving $50,000 to put towards the Tweed to Tyendinaga trail," says Jo-Anne Albert, Reeve of the Municipality of Tweed. "This will be a good investment to support active living in our communities.

"We are very happy that the EOTA was successful in this funding opportunity," says Rick Phillips, Reeve of the Township of Tyendinaga, "and we look forward to all the good things that will come of this trail development project."

The EOTA, Municipality of Tweed and Township of Tyendinaga want to thank everyone for their support. We could not have done it without you.

Introducing Creative Hastings

Hastings County is pleased to announce an exciting new networking event known as "Creative Hastings". The first event is taking place on Wednesday, March 21st from 6:30 - 8 p.m. at West Wings in downtown Stirling. Admission is free and open to anyone interested in learning more about a growing sector of our economy called the "creative economy".

Presented in partnership with the Small Business Centre, Creative Hastings events are an opportunity for creative-minded people of Hastings County to connect over local food and the desire to build a richer local economy. "Everyone is invited to attend this free event, from entrepreneurs, to local volunteer groups and to those who just wish to learn more about what we're doing to support economic development," states Terry Clemens, Warden of Hastings County.

"Networking is so vital to business success and can be especially difficult when you consider that many who work in our local economy work from home or in small offices," says Economic Development Manager Andrew Redden. "I'm tasked with encouraging the growth and success of our rural economy and this event is another way to showcase the creative talents that we already have here in order to attract more".

Canada's economy is changing. Over the past 30 years, Ontario has experienced a shift from an industrial economy to one based on creativity, knowledge and innovation. In Hastings County today, approximately one third of our businesses are considered part of the new "creative" economy. On March 21st, the evening will consist of brief presentations by a number of local entrepreneurs preceded and followed by time for networking. The second event will take place on May 23rd at the Royal Canadian Legion in Coe Hill. For more information, visit investinhastings.ca

These events will be rotating throughout the County. Tweed is being considered to host the third event in the late summer or early fall.

"Push the Button"

The Tweed Fire Department is always looking for ways to educate the community on fire preventative measures.

On February 24th the Ontario Fire Marshall and TVO kids launched the "push the button" campaign with the aim of getting as many people as possible to test their smoke alarms.

"We'd like to see the kids in Tweed get this message," says Deputy Fire Chief Mike Broek. "Your volunteer fire department in Tweed is always looking for ways to get the smoke alarm message out to the public, and the "push the button" campaign is a unique way of engaging the children, to help them understand the importance."

After testing the alarm, kids can print off a certificate from TVO kids - go to www.tvokids.com and click on ages 11 and under, then click the 'push the button' on the main page, enter how many smoke alarms in the house were tested, and then print off the certificate. Adults and parents are also encouraged to take part in the campaign, which runs until March 11th. Children should consult with an adult before they "push the button".

It is the law in Ontario for every home to have a working smoke alarm on every storey of the house and outside all areas where people sleep. Homeowners have the responsibility of installing and maintaining smoke alarms.

Below is a list of important tips for fire prevention in your home:

Stay in the kitchen when something is cooking on the stove.

Store matches and lighters out of sight and out of reach of children.

Ensure fireplaces and woodstoves are properly installed, and that chimneys and flue pipes are inspected and cleaned regularly.

Keep portable space heaters at least one meter away from anything that can burn.

Candles, when lit, should be out of reach of children and pets to prevent them from being knocked over. Always extinguish candles before going to bed or leaving the room.

Have a working smoke alarm on every level of your home. Test the alarm every month and change the batteries twice a year when the clocks change.

All families should develop and practice a home fire escape plan, so that everyone knows what to do and where to go when the smoke alarm sounds.

Sharon Pedersen - who led the project - credits the TACDC members for their contribution in compiling this valuable resource. "As you will note, there are plenty of interesting things to see and do within the Municipality of Tweed. It is the hope of the TACDC that this document will be used by both tourists and residents. We hope that everyone enjoys our beautiful scenery, friendly folks along the way, and a pace of life that is both relaxing and inviting. Perhaps the most difficult decision of your day will be what to do first!"

The Tweed and Area Community Development Committee (TACDC) is an independent, community-based group of volunteers focused on implementation of the ICSP (Integrated Community Sustainability Plan). The geographic focus of the CDC is the Municipality of Tweed, including the rural areas, hamlets and the Village. The CDC monitors progress on the implementation of the ICSP, shares information, and encourages stakeholders to work individually or together on initiatives that support the actions identified in the ICSP. The TACDC also selectively undertakes actions that are not currently being done by others. Collectively, its efforts will make the Tweed and Area community a better place to live, work and play.

CHEER US ON!!!

The Eastern Ontario Trails Alliance (EOTA), the Municipality of Tweed and the Township of Tyendinaga have partnered to develop a trail between the Tweed Community Centre and the Tyendinaga Recreation Centre and will have a direct link to the surrounding EOTA trails.

An application for $50,000.00 was submitted to the Molson Coors 'Community Cheer' project and has been selected to the next phase and now is featured on their website.

The Community Cheer process requires members of a project community to vote for their favourite project submitted to OurCommunityCheer.com. When our project receives 225 "Cheers", it then becomes eligible for the final round which will be evaluated by the Molson Coors Community Relations team. We hope to surpass this mark as the number of "cheers" received is key to the final evaluation stage.

The funding will go towards the development of this trail. "We are pushing our community to "Cheer us on" in this amazing opportunity that we have," says Rick Phillips, Reeve of the Township of Tyendinaga. "Not only will the funding help develop the trail, it will give the two municipalities an opportunity to promote recreational activities which will benefit over 10,000 community residents. Please take a moment and "cheer" for us"!

"We are asking for all the support we can get, from within our communities and beyond," says Joanne Albert, Reeve of the Municipality of Tweed. "We need to show the funding body that a donation to support active living in our communities is a good investment."

Voting starts on Tuesday January 17, 2012 and goes until Friday February 10, 2012. To vote, like, or upload a photo please visit www.ourcommunitycheer.com and cast your vote for the EOTA Rec Centre to Rec Centre Trail.

The Municipality of Tweed has officially launched a social media communications network! The success of these initiatives in other regions as well as community demand and growing popularity has prompted Tweed to act. The use of social media by the Municipality is to be able to transmit and disseminate information to the public, to be engaged in the conversation, to listen to the community, and understand it better.

Visit the 'Get Connected' section of the Municipality of Tweed website to upload or watch a video on youtube, like us on facebook to join the conversation, and follow us on twitter to keep updated.

"It is important to build our audience so that we are connected to the public. In case of emergency instant advice and updates can be provided to our residents and visitors. It is also useful in tourism attraction to the region and can assist with the Parks, Recreation, and Culture segment of our community through promotion of events and festivals", commented Reeve Jo-Anne Albert.

These social media platforms are a value added service that will target and engage the youth and young adults within the community. However, it will not take away from traditional communication efforts. The Community Development Committee will also continue to use social media to communicate and promote Tweed!

Let's get going on 2012!

On behalf of the Municipal Council and staff I would like to extend a "Happy New Year" to all residents and visitors within our Municipality. As I reflect on the year past I am very proud of the accomplishments that we have made and am excited for the opportunities ahead in 2012.

Rural communities tend to struggle in challenging economic times. However, I believe that as a community we will continue to excel through our long standing history of community engagement. The tourism industry will once again be an important contributor to our local economy in 2012, so let's get going!

The Municipality is committed to providing support for the tourism industry within our region. Through Economic Development we will work with community groups to develop a strategic plan, provide assistance for events and attractions, and work with neighboring communities to help build the region as a whole. There were a lot of significant achievements in 2011, and we have a tremendous opportunity to build on these in 2012. So I encourage you to get involved and stay engaged. Together we can accomplish great things. We urge you to continue working together in maintaining and building a sustainable Tweed, and thank those who dedicate time and money to our community. If you have an event coming up this year, let us know the details by completing a Coming Events Form. Where applicable our Municipal office will then help promote your event in various ways; inclusion on the electronic sign, post information in the online events calendar, complete a news release and forward information to various promotional groups.

We also have increased our communication efforts. Stay up to date with what's happening in the community through our website at www.twp.tweed.on.ca. Our site will feature a comprehensive events calendar, news releases and information posting, and up to date business directory, investment opportunities, visitor information, and more. We are making the effort to target and engage the youth within the community as well through social media platforms such as twitter, facebook and a youtube channel. Your Council strongly believes that Tweed is a great place to live, work, and play; let's make it even better in 2012!

Hastings County - A Wellness Tourism Destination

Full article 2_9available at:

The Municipality of Tweed would like to ensure that all business owners and residents are aware of a growing wellness tourism trend in Hastings County. The natural beauty of the landscape, unique energy from local rocks, crystals, fossils and native communities as well as the over 500 businesses that are now involved in 'wellness' makes the area a wellness destination.

In 2010, Hastings County completed the province's Premier-ranked Tourist Destinations (PRTD) Framework, and as a result, the County's Tourism Industry now has a series of actionable recommendations to grow tourism locally. To help implement the recommendations set out in the PRTD Final Report and Action Plan, Hastings County has created a destination development working group comprised of tourism industry stakeholders to act as a steering committee to help drive the process and implement these actionable recommendations.

Through the efforts of the PRTD group an information session for the wellness community was held on Thursday, November 24th in Limerick Township. The session was designed as a discussion forum where stakeholders could collaborate on ideas and to gather information. The next step is to establish a wellness committee that is focused on developing Hastings County into a 'wellness destination'.

Businesses within the Municipality of Tweed (Spa's, Chiropractors, Physiotherapists, accommodators, hair studios, etc.) should look into the opportunities of being a part of this group. The wellness initiative coordinators and the chair, Janice Chrysler (owner of Mindful Journey in Marmora) are looking for information from these types of businesses and will be building trip packages, and promotional items to help attract tourists.

In addition, people that are looking to make an investment or start up a business may want to look into the possibilities within the industry. Taking into account the demographics of the region, as well as tourism opportunities, health and wellness businesses could work successfully within the Municipality.

Over the years Jamie has paid attention to his customer's wants and needs and has tried to accommodate.
